You should submit an application as early as possible during the year before you wish to enroll. If you are currently in high school you must attach a list of the 12th grade courses in which you are enrolled. Transcripts must be mailed directly from the high school to the UNO Office of Admissions in order to be considered official; ACT/SAT scores must be sent directly to UNO from the American College Testing Program/Educational Testing Services.

ACT and SAT Tests

If you are a freshman or transfer applicant who has completed less than 18 semester hours of college coursework, you must take the ACT (American College Test) and have your scores sent to UNO (college code 1591). National ACT tests are administered in October, December, February, April, and June each year at regular ACT testing centers. The SAT I (Scholastic Aptitude Test, UNO college code 6379) may be used in place of the ACT. Test dates are in October, November, December, January, April, May, and June. Contact UNO Testing Services at (504)-280-TEST (8378) for additional ACT test dates or for special accommodations testing, both offered on the UNO campus. We also strongly recommend that you take the optional ACT Writing Test, which will be offered beginning Spring 2005. Both the ACT Writing and the Writing component of the SAT can be used at UNO for placement in English composition classes.

Transfer Students

You should submit an application as early as possible during the year before you wish to enroll. On the application you must indicate all colleges and/or universities attended whether or not you have earned credit. In addition, you should include any schools you plan to attend before your actual enrollment at UNO. You must request that the registrar of each university you have attended send official transcript(s) to the UNO Office of Admissions. Transcripts are only considered official if they are mailed directly from the registrar to our Office of Admissions. Student copies of transcripts are not considered official. If you are enrolled in college when you apply to UNO you must send transcripts at the time of application and again at the close of the semester. Generally a 2.25 cumulative GPA is required for admission.

If you have graduated from high school and have completed fewer than 18 semester hours of college credit you must meet both freshman and transfer admission requirements.

Returning UNO Undergraduate Students

If you are a former UNO undergraduate and you were not enrolled in the regular semester (excluding Summer Session) preceding the semester of desired enrollment, you must re-apply for admission. The application fee is waived for returning UNO students; you will be assessed a late fee if your application is received after the priority date.

Merit Scholarship Program

New freshmen and transfer students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships if the application, transcripts and test scores required for admission are on file by the January 15 priority date for the incoming fall class. Notification of awards will be mailed on a rolling basis through March. For a more detailed description of the types of scholarships and the minimum criteria, click here or contact the Chief Coordinator of Scholarships in the Office of Student Financial Aid at (504) 280-3191, email finaid@uno.edu

Instructions for All Students

Guest Students

If you are pursuing a degree at another university, and you wish to take courses at UNO for one semester as a guest student, please indicate this on the application (question 24 for undergraduate students and question 29 for graduate students). A Letter of Good Standing from the Registrar (if you are an undergraduate student) or Dean of the Graduate School (if you are a graduate student) from your home institution giving you permission to take courses at UNO may substitute for an official transcript.

Financial Aid

To be considered for financial aid you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available in high school guidance offices and the UNO Office of Student Financial Aid. Our Office of Student Financial Aid must receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) as soon as possible in order to consider you for all types of aid. Aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. You may contact our Office of Student Financial Aid at (504) 280-6603 for further details. The Title IV code for the University of New Orleans is 002015.

Selective Service Registration

Louisiana State law stipulates that we must confirm the Selective Service registration of all draft eligible males (generally between the ages of 18 and 25, U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens) before we permit students to enroll. We will contact Selective Service for this verification. However, if Selective Service cannot confirm your draft registration, we will ask you to provide us with a copy of your draft card or, if you have been in the Service, a copy of your discharge papers. If you have been excused from the draft, you should send the Office of Admissions proof that you have been excused.

Immunization

Louisiana law requires new students to provide proof of immunization against measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, and tetanus. If you were born before 1957 you need only satisfy the diphtheria-tetanus requirement. This information must be submitted to our Office of Student Health Services before you register for classes. Student Health Services, (504) 280-6387, will contact you regarding this requirement once you are admitted.

Student Housing

Several choices in on-campus housing are available, including an apartment-style complex, Privateer Place. Contact the Office of Student Housing at (504) 280-6585 for more details and an application for on-campus housing.

Disabled Students

Federal law prohibits us from making pre-admission inquiry about learning or other disabilities. Any information received regarding learning or other disabilities will not adversely affect any admission decision. If you require special services because of your disability you should notify the Office of Disability Services at (504) 280-6222. This voluntary self-identification allows UNO to prepare appropriate support services to facilitate your learning. This information will be kept in strict confidence. This and all publications of the University of New Orleans are available in alternate media for persons with disabilities.

Non-U.S. Citizens

Please submit a photocopy of both sides of your Alien Registration Card (Form I-551) if you are a permanent resident alien.
If you are already in the U.S. and you hold another type of visa, please submit a photocopy of your Arrival-Departure Record (Form I-94) and passport visa stamp.

International Students

    Academic records required are:
  • official certified transcripts of each year of secondary school/college or university work;
  • certified English translation of each year of secondary school/college or university work.

Each transcript should include the dates of attendance, titles of courses, credits earned, detailed marks, and an explanation of the marks or grading system used. These records must be authenticated as accurate by an appropriate school or government official. The records must be mailed directly to this office from the school. No photocopies will be accepted. TOEFL scores are required if you are from a non-English speaking country. Please contact the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NY 08540 for a TOEFL application form. The I-20 form is not issued until all financial documents have been received and you are admitted.
