University of New Orleans: A Special Place for Nontraditional Adult Students
The University of New Orleans, the metropolitan region's flagship public university, is committed to making higher education available and affordable to all qualified students. UNO actively recruits and supports a large population of nontraditional students. In fact, half of UNO's student body is over the age of 25, many with families and established careers. UNO understands both the special needs and talents of the older student, and we offer a number of programs to help ensure your success as an adult learner.
Getting Ready to Succeed
If you've been out of school for a while, or maybe never attended college after high school, UNO can help you make a successful transition to college life. Metropolitan College, the University's continuing education arm, offers useful programs.
- Adults Considering College Free Informational Seminars are short informational sessions held throughout the year to answer important questions about getting started at UNO for potential adult students.
- Career Planning and Assessment non-credit courses are reasonably priced career counseling sessions to help high school students and adults identify their career interests and options.
- Academic Preparation Refresher Skills are affordable non-credit courses that reinforce basic math, vocabulary, and writing skills prior to taking a college course.

Scholarships for Adult Students
If you have never enrolled at a college or university, UNO can help you get a taste of college learning with our Adult Student Scholarship. This scholarship covers the tuition cost of one three-credit course.

Special Services for Adults
UNO understands that adult students may have special needs. We offer a variety of programs and services to accommodate you and your academic achievement. Child care, married student housing, health insurance, academic counseling and career services are just some of the ways UNO helps you fit college into your life. Read on for details!
The UNO Children's Center offers an exemplary early childhood education program for children ages 12 months to 5 years. You must be enrolled to take advantage of the Center. Special student rates are available. Call (504) 280-3131 for more information.
- Apartment living is available on-campus for full-time married students or single students with dependent children.
- Lafitte Village offers one- and two-bedroom units with all the conveniences of campus life.
- Privateer Place, apartment style residence hall open to married and single students, and
- Bienville Hall, our traditional dormitory style residence, are other housing options. Call Student

Health care is available at Student Health Services in the University Center. All students are eligible for general medical services, nurse services and health consultation, plus lab work and a discount in-house pharmacy. Health insurance is also available at a modest premium.
Career services are available free of charge at the Career Placement and Cooperative Education Center. We can help you with career planning, development, and employment opportunities, both after graduation and part-time during school.
Some adult students take advantage of the Cooperative Education Program. You can combine academic study with planned, supervised, and paid work experience related to your academic major. Call (504) 280-6225 for details on this program.
Adjusting to college can be a challenge. The Counseling Center can help you deal with the unique social and emotional concerns of adults through individual or group counseling. The Counseling Center also offers in-depth career testing for UNO students. Phone (504) 280-6683.
The UNO Women's Center helps meet the changing needs of our women students with programs, a library, and support with women's issues. Membership is open to enrolled students. Phone (504) 280-7285.
Veterans attending UNO should check with the UNO Office of Veterans Affairs, to determine eligibility for educational benefits. Phone (504) 280-6216.
Convenient Evening Hours - We want to be available when it is convenient for you, so our administrative offices, college offices, and Bookstore are open until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays when classes are in session to accommodate your needs.
The Learning Resource Center provides one-to-one tutoring in math and English, as well as, audio, video and computerized instruction. Contact (504) 280-7053 for more information.
The Earl K. Long Library houses a collection of over one million scholarly and professional books, periodicals, slides and microfiche and is open seven days a week. Librarians are available to assist you in locating materials. A one credit Library Resource course is also available to help prepare you for research projects. The Computer Research Center offers computer facilities for instruction and research. Phone (504) 280-6374 for more information. Many of the Colleges also have computer laboratories for their students to use for a wide range of class projects. Check with your college office for details regarding use and availability.

Scholastic amnesty - Been away from school for a while and want to start with a "clean slate"? You may qualify for this option if you have been away from school for three years or more. Contact the Office of Admissions for details (504) 280-6595.
Course Variety that Suits your Schedule - UNO offers a variety of television, off-campus, sunrise, evening, weekend, and mini courses that are sure to accommodate your personal needs. Whether at the Lakefront Campus, Downtown New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, the Northshore or Stennis Space Center we are committed to providing quality, affordability and convenience.
Unconventional Means of Earning College Credit at the University of New Orleans
Looking for ways to earn college credit in a particular area without spending a semester in the classroom? If you have the knowledge, UNO offers you several options to earn the credit without taking the course. How? Other Campus Services
In addition to the services listed above, the University also provides the auxiliary services you want and need on campus. You can buy new and used textbooks at the UNO Bookstore; grab a quick bite or a full meal at the Cove or the Cafeteria; catch up on campus events with the Driftwood, UNO's student newspaper; work out, play tennis, swim, or join a club sport with Recreation and Intramural Sports. It's all waiting for you at UNO.
Financing Your Education
Financing your education is a major concern for most students. At the University of New Orleans, you have several options of paying for your college years. The Office of Student Financial Aid (504)280-6603 can help you decide the best way to manage your college expenses. Contact them as early as possible in advance of your enrollment to learn about grants, loans, scholarships, and the college work-study program. Over 68% of UNO students receive some form of financial aid. You may be eligible, too. And the UNO Office of Career Development can help you find part-time employment off-campus.
Once you've registered for class, you may be concerned about paying your fees on time. UNO offers a deferred billing plan to let you budget your payments across the semester. Pay half of your fee bill at registration and the balance in two more payments during the school term.
If you pay your fees in full, you can take advantage of early mail-in or phone in VISA or MasterCard payment. Of course, checks and cash are also welcome.
Undergraduate Programs
UNO can help you prepare for a satisfying lifetime career or help you retrain for a new one. Most nontraditional adult students do exceptionally well at UNO, because they are highly motivated and disciplined. You'll find mature people just like you enrolled in every major at UNO.
The degree-granting colleges are the College of Business Administration; the College of Education; the College of Engineering; the College of Liberal Arts; the College of Sciences; the College of Urban and Public Affairs; and the Metropolitan College, which grants the Bachelor of General Studies degree. Undergraduate Admission
Adult students have several options for enrolling at UNO. See which option best suits your need.
Special Student If you are an undergraduate and wish to take college classes as a nondegree student, you may apply as a Special Student. Special Students do not need to submit transcripts. Consult the Office of Admissions for details about Special Student status.
Regular Admissions If you plan to pursue an undergraduate degree program, you should apply for regular admission.
Apply early and avoid late application fees. To enroll for the fall semester, apply by July 1; for the spring semester, apply by November 15; and for the summer semester, apply by May 1.
Returning UNO Student If you have been a UNO student in the past, you only need to complete a brief re-entry application form. There is no application fee if you file prior to the published priority dates.
Placement in Math and English
If you will enter UNO as a freshman or as a transfer student without college credit in mathematics or English composition, you must take the UNO Mathematics and English Placement Test before registering for classes. If your ACT scores are on file at UNO, you do not need to take the Math Placement Test unless you want to improve your math placement.You can also take the ACT writing test for UNO English Placement. Graduate Admission
If you already hold a bachelor's degree, you may continue your studies at UNO as a graduate student. You have two options for enrolling in the Graduate School.
Nondegree Graduate Student If you do not wish to pursue an advanced degree, you may apply as a nondegree graduate student. If you are a pre-med or pre-MBA student or are working towards teacher certification, you'll need to submit an official transcript certifying your bachelor's degree. Other nondegree students do not need to submit transcripts.
Degree-Seeking Graduate Student If you want to pursue a master's or doctoral degree or take 6000 level business or political science classes, you must apply as a degree-seeking graduate student. Contact the Office of Admissions at (504) 280-6595 for more information.
Master's Degree
UNO offers master's degrees in the following areas: accounting, business administration, healthcare management, hospitality and tourism management, education, curriculum and instruction, counselor education, educational administration, human performance and health promotion, special education, engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, arts administration, communications, drama and communications (film production, performance and production arts, creative writing), English, English teaching, fine arts, geography, history, history teaching, music, political science, romance languages, sociology, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, physics, applied physics, psychology, science teaching, urban and regional planning, public administration, and urban studies.
Doctoral Degrees
UNO offers Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the following programs: financial economics, curriculum and instruction, counselor education, educational administration, special education, engineering and applied science, political science, conservation biology, chemistry, psychology, urban studies.
Admission Policy
It is the policy of UNO that admission to the University is open to all persons who meet the admission requirements and qualifications of the University. In all programs or operations of the University, no distinction is made between persons on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, age, disability, national origin, marital or veterans' status.
